Historical Christian South Australian Trivia! Lay Preachers

South Australia seems to know how to run a festival – I understand now why it is called ‘The Festival State’! This month is History Festival.

Did you know that many of the directors of the South Australia Company were lay preachers? The South Australia Company was an organization formed in 1835 to develop a new settlement in SA (it only ended formal business in 1949). The founding shareholders were Robert Gouger, George Fife Angas, Thomas Smith and Henry Kingscote, who were soon accompanied by some 300 additional shareholders. Among these were John Rundle, Charles Hindley, Raikes Currie, John Hindmarsh, John Pirie , Charles Mann, George Gawler and Henry Waymouth, whose names now adorn Adelaide’s city streets or monuments.

How awesome it is when you are given a gift!

What makes a gift so awesome is that it comes to you free and comes to you when someone has put thought into a gift that would best suit you.

Let’s think though the topic of ‘Predestination’.

Historical Christian South Australian Trivia! Captain Charles Sturt

Charles Sturt

South Australia is unique in Australia’s history as the only state settled by a group of Christians not aligned to the Church of England! It was settled by a group of Christians often called the Dissenters who held the founding principle that there should be no state aid offered to any religious group (to avoid Christianity being controlled by the State).

Question: A ‘fruit of the Spirit’ is ‘peace’ yet sometimes even Christians experience personal conflict – where is peace when engaged in conflict??

question mark

The second characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) is ‘peace’ and for Christians it may be helpful to consider the idea of ‘letting go and letting God!’ Often the reason why we are not ‘at peace’ in situations is because we are holding the reigns too tightly as if that was the way to ensure we get our own way. Whether you get your own way or not is secondary to the attitude which we bring to any conflict situation. What we need to ensure we do in all circumstances is honour God and so ‘letting go and letting God’ is a good rule of thumb.

Three questions you may find helpful to ask yourself:

  1. In conflict – have you thought about why the conflict has arisen?
  2. How do you approach conflict – avoid it, embrace it or treat it as a godly challenge?
  3. Above all, in whatever you do, do you honour God – in the home, in church, in the world?

Happy CHRISTmas

Christmas is upon us (that seems to have happened fast as always). One of my prayers is that you and your wider families have a wonderful, Christ honouring, and blessed Christmas this year.

What a privilege it has been for me to be in ministry of the gospel alongside you. I am so very thankful to God for many of the things that we have been able to do as 5pm Church this last twelve months. Further I am constantly humbled (in a good way) by the responsibility you give me to teach the Bible and direct ministry as your Pastor. Thank you.
