Sermon – How to go to Church: Gospel Gifts (1 Cor 12:1-11)

Read the text – 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

In this Bible talk, Ken Noakes look at what is written to the church of Corinth about how spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit for a purpose. Misused, these gifts and our attitude toward those who don’t seem to have the same gifts, can cause us to become prideful and feel superior to others spiritually. That should not be. We are reminded that each gift from the Holy Spirit is used for serving each other, for the common good, while glorifying the Lord. It is not for ranking each other spiritually.

Sermon – Apostles’ Creed: ‘I believe in the Holy Spirit’

Read the texts – Ezekiel 36:22-30Romans 8:1-17

In this talk we look at the third ‘I believe’ statement in the Apostles’ Creed. Glen Connor, looking at Romans 8:1-17 shows us five aspects of how the Holy Spirit works in the life of a believer: to free us from sin and death, change our mindset towards God, to guarantee our resurrection, to bring holiness in the life of the believer, and makes us God’s children.

Sermon – Apostles Creed: Fully God. Fully Man.

Read the text – Hebrews 2:1-18

For thousands of years Christians have said the words of the Apostles Creed together. In this talk Howard Whitehouse looks at the line in the creed which states ‘I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary’ and focuses on the beautiful and complex nature of Jesus Christ being fully God and fully Man. This is a rich treatment and needs close attention to several Bible passage – and you will see Howard cover many of them in this talk.

Sermon – Spiritual Wisdom (1 Cor 2:6-16)

Read the text – 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

What should hold a church together – Our relationships? Our feeling of belonging? Our gospel convictions? Jesus? The Apostle Paul wrote this extraordinary letter to a church he knew well, yet a church which had got itself into a bit of a muddle. It turns out that the Christian Family does matter – and it is important to ensure that Jesus sits at the heart and soul of this church and in fact any church.

In this talk, Ken Noakes looks at what it means to be mature in Christ by understanding the wisdom of God, which is impossible without the Spirit revealing it to us.

Sermon – New Beginnings: Seeing What is Best (John 1:19-34)

The Gospel of John introduces Jesus and gives him an extraordinary array of titles. Jesus does not disappoint. His teaching, his interactions, his miracles and his knowledge give those who meet him cause to question who he is – and as readers we also can look at these ‘encounters’ and decide for ourselves whether Jesus is worth another look. Perhaps a new beginning for a new year.

This talk looks at John the Baptist’s testimony about Jesus, and helps us to consider who Jesus is.

Sermon – God’s Own People (Romans 8:5-17)

Romans 1-8 Slide

The most important thing for Christians to do – especially when we find ourselves continuing to sin – is not to do, but to be; to be “in the Spirit” – that is, to belong to God through Christ and submit to his rule. Pleasing God is the work he does in us by his Spirit, as his Spirit leads us and confirms that we are God’s children and heirs, and enables us to call him “Father”.

What does it mean?

peters-pentecost-sermon

Amazed and perplexed they asked ‘What does this mean?’. You see, in Jerusalem that day there were Jews representing many nations and languages and yet each one heard the proclamation of the Holy Spirit in their own language. They were bewildered because the disciples of Jesus could speak in their own vernacular – and they made perfect sense! How strange to hear something so clearly and yet not understand.

Have you ever found yourself looking at what God is doing and wondering: ‘What does this mean?’ I have!
