How awesome it is when you are given a gift!
What makes a gift so awesome is that it comes to you free and comes to you when someone has put thought into a gift that would best suit you.
Let’s think though the topic of ‘Predestination’.
Predestination to Life is the everlasting purpose of God, whereby he hath constantly decreed by his counsel secret to us, to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in Christ out of mankind, and bring them by Christ to everlasting salvation. (Articles of Religion –Article 17)
This is a doctrine to celebrate. God the Father has given a costly gift to us, when none of us deserved it. He has thought best to give to us what we need and in doing so delivered us from curse and damnation.
There is nothing we could have done to acquire the gift. It has cost us nothing.
Now let us consider what we do with gifts. There are four responses.
- Reject it. – Thank you very much, but I am happy without your generous gift.
- Forget it. Place it on the shelf and forget about. – Thank you, how sweet of you, I will take this gift but it will not be used (unless really necessary) and when the next time I get around to a clean-up I might just throw it out.
- Misuse it. Thank you, what a beautiful pen, I am going to use that as a spear!
- Accept it and Apply it. Take the gift and use it for the purpose for which it was given. – Thank you, this is awesome. You have worked out what I need most and given it to me. I will make the most of it.
When salvation is given for our benefit, should we not accept it and ensure that it changes the way we live? Our predestination is a matter for God, our response is a matter of obedience. He chose us in love, to be holy and blameless in his sight (Eph 1:4). What will that look like this week? Or to ask another way, are you living this week in such a way that rejects, forgets or misuses the gift you have been given?
