Question – Are there contradictions within the Bible?
‘It has been said that there are contradictions within the Bible. Is this due to false teaching?’
Good question.
As you read through the Bible there are times when it appears that it contradicts itself, it doesn’t happen often. It doesn’t if you read it right.
Let me help with two pointers.
A Call to Arms
The body is a unit of many parts – why would you possibly think that the parts would act first of their own interest before that of the rest of the body?! Imagine if the foot said ‘Hey hand forget about me I add nothing’ or the ear shouted to the eye ‘leave me behind, I am worthless’!
Ludicrous! The point is we shouldn’t think it because it is such a ridiculous picture.
Falling out of Love!
Well if you missed Sunday night you missed this!
It is time that many at 5pm Church fell a little out of love with money! I have heard it said that the least believed verse in the Bible is this:
‘You can not serve both God and Money’ (Matt 6:24; Luke 16:13)
Least believed, because it is a verse that is either ignored, or a verse that most think is not something they should pay attention too, because they happen to be the exception – they are the one who can, love both God and Money!!
Slice of Heaven (Part 3)
So we have looked at six reasons why the doctrine of heaven is neglected and then four reasons why Heaven should really matter to us. In this third essay, I want to look at ‘Why heaven exists?’!
Heaven Matters (Part 2)
Baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lyin’ here in my arms
I’m findin’ it hard to believe
We’re in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see
We’re in heaven
So sings Bryan Adams (Yes I know it was right back in 1984, but tell me you don’t know the song!).
For Heaven’s Sake (Part 1)
Several weeks ago (in preparation for the 5pm Church Mission) I wrote three articles on the wonderfully rosy topic of Hell!
- O Hell – why talk about it?
- What the Hell – why we don’t talk about it?
- Scaring the Hell out of you – What is hell!
I said I would return to the more digestible topic of Heaven and given that we are now working our way through Revelation, this is a good time. From one of the most unpopular doctrines to one of the most!
Love Wins
Over the weekend, in a 5-4 ruling the US High Court ruled in favour of recognizing marriages between people of the same sex. This means that the 14 states which had not previously ruled this way would now be forced to allow same-sex marriage.
This makes me feel really sad.
The Troubles of my Heart
One of joys and burdens of being the 5pm Church Pastor is to sit with folk whom I love and hear them tell me about how tough life is for them. There are 5pm family members who are really really struggling at the moment.
And there are many reasons that lie behind some of those struggles – unemployment, depression, grief, breakdown in relationship, childlessness, money, marriage difficulties, singleness issues, doubts of faith and more.
How I long to just snap my fingers and have the problems fixed. I don’t like to see folk walking such hard paths.
Praying in Thanks
‘I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of the partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, because confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus’ (Phil 1:3-6)
So Paul begins as he writes to the church in Philippi. How encouraging. He gave thanks for the partnership in the gospel he shared with the Christians in that city.
Friends, I am not the Apostle Paul, and to be honest I could not say that I always thank God for all of you – which is both a sad indictment and a rebuke for me. I should be more concerned for praying in thanks for 5pm Church.
That said, I have been thankful in prayer for the efforts that so many have put in as part of the ‘Hello Neighbor’ mission we have just been running.
