Question: What does Ephesians 5:21-33 say about how men should relate to other women who are not their wives?
Thanks for the question.
Your question however is not really answered by the passage. Notice that Ephesians 5:21-33 is using an exclusive relationship to illustrate a point for the whole church. This passage is not saying ‘Women, submit to Men’ or ‘Men, love Women’. It is saying ‘Wives, submit to the husband you have married’ (my paraphrase) or ‘Husbands, love the wife you have married’ (my paraphrase again).

Bernie
Confronted by racism, attacks and threats, Bernie’s welcome to Australia was not what he expected. But then he found a group of people who were totally different—they were welcoming, inclusive and caring. What was the reason behind their actions?
Growing Pains
Ed – Written on 20th March 2013
As I read through the Acts of the Apostles I realize I am dealing with a unique book in the Bible. Acts links the gospel accounts of Jesus to the ministry letters of Paul, James, John and Peter – in other words – Acts gives us an understanding of how the ministry that Jesus commissioned his disciples to do, turned out (at least in that first generation) as the first church of Christians was established.
One of the key themes that appears in Acts is ‘growth’. Look at this…
Gospel Encouragement
‘You, Son of a …. ‘
How would you complete that statement – in an encouraging way or a cursing way?
On Sunday we met Joseph from Cyprus in Acts 4:36. This man was a man of encouragement. In fact, he had such an encouraging effect on people that Luke goes out of his way to identify him so readers would know who was being talked about – ‘Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement)’.
What does a man have to do, to gain such a good reputation among people, that he gets renamed in such a way that defines his character – ‘Son of Encouragement’?
A Call to Arms
The body is a unit of many parts – why would you possibly think that the parts would act first of their own interest before that of the rest of the body?! Imagine if the foot said ‘Hey hand forget about me I add nothing’ or the ear shouted to the eye ‘leave me behind, I am worthless’!
Ludicrous! The point is we shouldn’t think it because it is such a ridiculous picture.
Heaven Matters (Part 2)
Baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lyin’ here in my arms
I’m findin’ it hard to believe
We’re in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see
We’re in heaven
So sings Bryan Adams (Yes I know it was right back in 1984, but tell me you don’t know the song!).
For Heaven’s Sake (Part 1)
Several weeks ago (in preparation for the 5pm Church Mission) I wrote three articles on the wonderfully rosy topic of Hell!
- O Hell – why talk about it?
- What the Hell – why we don’t talk about it?
- Scaring the Hell out of you – What is hell!
I said I would return to the more digestible topic of Heaven and given that we are now working our way through Revelation, this is a good time. From one of the most unpopular doctrines to one of the most!
Love actually!
Love actually!
Walk in Love said 2 John 6 – a key theme of his ‘Little John’ letters.
But How? By walking in obedience silly! It is difficult to think of ways to be loving in disobedience. That is because truly loving someone is actually about putting them before ourselves. If they ask you to do something that you don’t want to do, then being obedient to them would mean putting their will before our own. That is a demonstration of love.
But hold on, what if they ask you to do something that is wrong? Well, doing something wrong is hardly loving?!
